"This is why you were chosen. Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion. Whatever happens, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are, not a perfect soldier, but a good man. "
He's not the most popular; Iron Man is. He's doesn't have the most strength; the Hulk does. He can't call lightning from the sky; Thor can.
But he is a humble leader and a loyal friend, an unyielding ally and a mighty soldier. His goodness runs deep and does not yield for anything. His loyalty to America and his friends will not be shattered. He fights for what's right even if that means he fights alone. He is a selfless hero.
This is Captain America.
All these qualities attributed to the iconic superhero are seen by many as reasons for his dullness. Many claim him to be too boring and uncomplicated because he's too good. They prefer the arrogance of Tony Stark because Steve Rogers never does anything wrong.
I disagree; in my eyes, Captain America lives a very complicated life. He was once a weak, bullied young man who became strong without forgetting what it was to be weak. He never lost his humility, never let his new-found strength mar his righteousness. By all rights, he should have been able to live a happy life after the war. But instead, he sacrificed all he had ever known to save millions. He became a man out of time, frozen and lost from memory for nearly 70 years.
Now, thrust into the modern world, he represents the values and mindsets that seem old-fashioned and simplistic. All that he stands for is now challenged. He lives a tragic life, cut off from his past and thrust into a world where the line between right and wrong is now blurred.
In my eyes, Captain America is an extraordinarily complicated and unique superhero, unlike any of the others. He is defined by his old-fashioned goodness, a goodness which is sorely lacking in our modern world. He stands as a moral compass for the us all, even for his fellow Avengers. He might not be the superhero everyone would want to be. Let's face it, he doesn't have a flying suit of armor and can't call lightning from the sky. But he's the person we should all strive to be in life. His selfless courage and humility is a wonderful inspiration for us all.
